Free Canada sales tax calculator

Pick a province or territory to add GST, HST and any provincial sales tax to an amount, or pull the tax back out of a tax-inclusive total. The panel breaks the figure down line by line. It is a quick estimate, not tax advice, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

Rates are estimates that change over time and can differ for specific goods and services. This is a quick estimate, not tax advice. Verify current rates with the Canada Revenue Agency or your province before you rely on them.

How to use the calculator

Enter an amount, pick your province or territory, and choose a mode. Add tax takes a price before tax and shows the total to charge. Extract tax takes a tax-inclusive total and shows the pre-tax amount with the tax that was inside it. The panel splits out the GST or HST and any separate provincial tax, so a receipt or an invoice adds up cleanly.

The rates are estimates by province and can change, and some goods and services are taxed differently or are exempt, so confirm the current figures before you rely on them. For keeping the tax you collect separate from the money you actually keep, how to track business expenses is a good place to start.

Pick your province

The province sets whether you pay HST, GST on its own, or GST plus a separate provincial tax.

Add or extract

Add tax to a pre-tax price, or extract the tax already sitting inside a total from a receipt.

See the breakdown

The panel shows the GST or HST and any PST, QST or RST on their own lines, not just the total.

Use it as an estimate

It is a fast estimate for quoting and checking. For filing, confirm rates with the Canada Revenue Agency.

The sales tax formulas

Adding tax multiplies the amount by the combined rate. Extracting tax divides the total by one plus the combined rate to find the amount before tax.

Total = amount x (1 + combined rate)

Before tax = total / (1 + combined rate)

Tax = total - before tax

The combined rate is the GST or HST plus any provincial tax for the province you pick. The figures shown are estimates; verify current rates before filing. For the plain-language definitions behind the terms, see the profit and finance glossary.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?

GST is the five percent federal Goods and Services Tax charged across Canada. In some provinces it is combined with the provincial portion into a single Harmonized Sales Tax, or HST, such as thirteen percent in Ontario. Other provinces keep a separate provincial tax on top of GST, called PST in British Columbia and Saskatchewan, QST in Quebec and RST in Manitoba. The calculator handles all three cases by province.

How do I add sales tax to a price?

Choose Add tax, enter the amount before tax and pick your province. The calculator multiplies the amount by the GST or HST rate, adds any provincial tax, and shows the total you would charge. For example, a one hundred dollar item in Ontario at thirteen percent HST comes to one hundred and thirteen dollars.

How do I work out the tax already inside a total?

Choose Extract tax and enter the tax-inclusive total. The calculator divides it by one plus the combined rate to find the pre-tax amount, then shows how much of the total was GST or HST and any provincial tax. This is useful for receipts that only show the final figure.

Are these Canadian tax rates current?

They are estimates based on common provincial rates and can change over time, and some goods and services are taxed differently or exempt. This tool is a quick estimate, not tax advice. Verify current rates with the Canada Revenue Agency or your province before relying on them.
